CS101 GDB Solution · By · Dilshad Ahmed

Graded Discussion Board (GDB) for this course will be opened on March 01, 2022 for discussion and it will remain open for 2 days (48 hours) till on March 02, 2022.

Topic/Area for Discussion: “Networking and internet: Multimedia Streaming”

Module : 165

GDB Problem Statement

The use of computers, mobile phones, and communication technologies is increasing day by day. People around the globe are using internet services for social interaction, online business, online shopping, flight reservation, and various other activities. The use of communication technologies also helped educational institutes to survive during the current pandemic situation but they faced a lot of difficulties in providing education to the students at their homes. For sharing valuable knowledge among the students of various departments, an educational institute is planning to develop a video streaming service of its own for streaming lectures of different disciplines. They need to use a suitable streaming technology that is secure, and efficient in resource allocation and bandwidth utilization. Following are the two choices for adopting the mode of multimedia streaming:

  • Multicast
  • Broadcast

GDB Question:

Keeping the above scenario in view, which mode of streaming will you prefer? Briefly explain with solid reason in concrete form.

Broadcast: The transmission of information that is received by every device on the network. Multicast: The transmission of information that is received by the group of destination devices(computers) simultaneously.

BASIS FOR · BROADCAST · MULTICAST

Basic The information is transmitted

to all the hosts connected to

the network. The information is transmitted only to

intended recipients in the network.

Transmission One-to-all. One-to-many.

Management Broadcasting does not require

any group management. Multicasting requires group

management to define the group of

hosts/stations which will receive

information.

BASIS FOR · BROADCAST · MULTICAST

Bandwidth Bandwidth is wasted. Bandwidth is utilized efficiently.

Traffic Unnecessarily huge amount

traffic is generated in the

network. Traffic is under control.

Process Slow. Fast.

security Less secure More secure

speed Slow Fast

According to the given scenario, my preference in mode of streaming will be multicast because in multicast the data transferred to the group of destination devices simultaneously. In the given case the institution want to stream lectures to the student, multicast would be the best for this. In multicast, bandwidth is utilized efficiently, the resources are allocated efficiently, the speed is fast a and it is more secure than broadcast because the information is transferred to different groups of students by different hosts and all the things are under control, that’s why I would prefer multicast instead of broadcast.
