Gordon Allport – A Trait Theory of Personality

🌟 1. Biographical Sketch of Gordon Allport

Who was Gordon Allport?

Gordon Allport (1897–1967) was an American psychologist and one of the founders of personality psychology.

Why is he important?

He shifted psychology’s focus from:

mental illness → to normal, healthy personality

He believed: Every person is unique Personality should be studied person by person, not just by averages

His orientation:

Humanistic → humans are conscious, purposeful, and capable of growth Personalistic → focuses on the individual, not just statistics

📌 Key idea:

“People are not just collections of habits or unconscious drives. They have intentions, values, and goals.”

🌟 2. What Is Personality? (According to Allport)

Allport’s Definition:

Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine characteristic behavior and thought. Let’s simplify this 👇 Term Simple Meaning

Dynamic

Always changing and growing

Organization

Parts work together, not randomly

Psychophysical

Includes both mind (psycho) and body (physical)

Characteristic behavior

Typical ways you think, feel, and act

In plain English:

👉 Personality is how you usually think, feel, and behave, and how these patterns develop and change over time.

Example:

Two students face an exam: One stays calm and plans → confident personality One panics and avoids → anxious personality That difference = personality.

🌟 3. Criteria for an Adequate Personality Theory

Allport believed a good personality theory must:

  1. Study the whole person, not just parts
  2. Explain normal behavior, not only illness
  3. Focus on present motivations, not only childhood
  4. Recognize individual uniqueness
  5. Include conscious goals and values

📌 Memory hook: · “WHOLE – NOW – UNIQUE – PURPOSEFUL” · 🌟 4. Allport’s Concept of Traits

What is a Trait?

A trait is a predisposition (tendency) to respond in a consistent way to different situations.

Scientific meaning:

Predisposition → readiness to behave in a certain way Generalized action tendency → affects many behaviors, not just one

In simple words:

👉 A trait is a stable part of your personality that explains why you behave similarly in many situations.

Example:

If someone is honest: Honest in exams Honest with friends Honest at work That consistency = trait.

🌟 5. The “Traits of Traits” (Characteristics of Traits)

Allport explained what makes a trait a real trait:

1️⃣ A trait has more than nominal existence

👉 Traits are real, not just labels.

Example:

Kindness isn’t just a word—it shows in actions.
