Henry Murray’s Personology (Continued)

Henry Murray believed that personality is complex, dynamic, and deeply individual. He didn’t see people as machines reacting automatically. Instead, he saw them as living systems of needs, emotions, experiences, and meanings. This lesson continues with advanced but very important ideas in his theory.

🔹 5. Tension Reduction

Murray believed that: When a need is activated, the person experiences tension When the need is satisfied, tension is reduced Over time, people learn behaviors and pay attention to objects that help reduce tension This idea comes from drive theories in psychology.

🧠 Key Scientific Terms

Need: An internal psychological force that pushes a person to act Tension: An uncomfortable state caused by an unmet need Tension reduction: Relief felt when the need is satisfied Effect needs: Needs where satisfaction comes from the outcome (e.g., hunger, achievement)

🌱 Murray’s Important Addition

Murray said: This picture is incomplete Why? Because humans don’t only reduce tension — sometimes they create tension on purpose.

People sometimes: Delay pleasure Take challenges Put themselves in stressful situations

Why?

Because reducing a bigger tension later gives greater pleasure.

🧪 Everyday Examples

Studying hard for exams → stress → passing → huge relief Watching a scary movie → fear → relief → enjoyment Saving money → tension → buying something later → satisfaction 👉 So humans don’t avoid tension; they often use it to increase pleasure.

⚠️ Important Limitation

This idea applies mainly to effect needs. It does NOT fully apply to: Process activity needs (enjoyment during the activity itself) Modal needs (how an activity is done) For these, pleasure exists throughout the activity, not just at the end. 📌 Example: Dancing → enjoyable from start to finish Painting → pleasure in the process itself

🔹 6. Thema

A thema is an interactive behavioral unit that represents: The interaction between a need (inside the person) and a press (environmental force)

🧠 Key Terms

Press: Environmental pressure or situation that affects behavior Thema: A complete episode showing how a need and press interact Dyadic unit: Interaction between two people (not one alone)

A thema is a story-like episode that shows: What happened What need was triggered How the person responded What the outcome was Murray believed personality must be studied in relationships, not isolation.

📖 Examples from Murray

Example 1: Rejection

Someone ignores you → (rejection press) Your rejection need is activated You ignore them back 👉 This is a rejection thema
