Personality Psychology: New Directions
What is this lesson REALLY about?
This lesson is basically saying: “Personality psychology has grown up. It’s no longer just about traits or childhood trauma. Now we study how people adapt, interact with environments, use their brains, regulate themselves, and live real lives.” So this chapter: Revises core concepts (personality, traits, mechanisms) Explains how personality is studied and measured Introduces new research directions
Personality = traits (shy, confident, angry, etc.)
New thinking:
Personality = how a person adapts and interacts with their environment
🔹 Definition (simple):
Personality is a stable pattern of traits, psychological processes, and behaviors that explain: how people are different how they think, feel, act how they adapt to life
TRAITS (Core Building Blocks)
🔹 Trait (definition):
A trait is a relatively stable characteristic of a person. Examples: Shy vs confident Talkative vs quiet Generous vs miserly Traits don’t change every day. You don’t wake up shy today and fearless tomorrow.
Why traits matter (VERY important for exams):
1️⃣ Describe people
Traits help us label differences “She’s introverted” “He’s emotionally stable”
2️⃣ Explain behavior (WHY)
Why does she avoid parties? → She’s introverted Why does he help others? → He’s generous
3️⃣ Predict behavior (WHAT WILL HAPPEN)
Who will handle stress better?
Who will panic under pressure?
📌 Key idea:
Traits = description + explanation + prediction
PART 2: PSYCHOLOGICAL MECHANISMS
(This is where many students panic—don’t)
🔹 Psychological Mechanisms (definition):
Mental processes that produce behavior. In plain English: These are the “mental machines” running inside you. Examples: Memory Attention Emotion regulation Motivation Decision-making
Important points:
They involve information processing They are not always active They turn on only in certain situations 📌 Example: You don’t feel anxiety all the time. It activates during exams, interviews, danger.
PART 3: WITHIN THE INDIVIDUAL
(Consistency over time)
Meaning:
Personality is something you carry with you.
