The general definition of the cultural relativism is the perspective that requires people to evaluate other’s culture from the historically contextual point. When there are different culture, subculture and counterculture as it is the case with Pakistan, cultural relativism helps in handling social realities. Below are five arguments on how cultural relativism can help navigate cultural diversity in Pakistan:
- Fosters Tolerance and Respect: The values of cultural relativism should then embrace because it helps people accept practices with reference to their own culture. In Pakistan the knowledge of Baloch, Punjabi, and Pashtun cultural practices and appreciating those differences prevents hatred and bigotry.
- Preserves Local Traditions: While few would argue that culture is a useful tool, cultural relativism prevents Pakistan from judging itself by someone else’s standards and thus retain the diverse elements of culture in the society. For instance, tradition of rural people or Sufi activities may look unfamiliar but are important in terms of social identity.
- Reduces Cultural Imperialism: This theory makes globalization work to support the concept that no culture is superior to the other. Unusually, in Pakistan, people trend towards Western culture even if it masks the native customs. But through cultural relativism one would be able to defend native practices and make the society accept the practices.
- Supports Social Cohesion: Knowledge about object(s) of a subculture as well as source(s) of countercultures, such as urban youth cultures or religious minorities, diminishes tensions and estrangement. For instance, delinquent groups within the youths in urban centers may look as rebellious but are more of a self- assertion.
- Enhances Conflict Resolution: Culture sensitivity allows other people form one culture to engage in a conversation with people from other cultures. In a culturally diverse country it works to solve conflicts by encouraging tolerance as is evident with interfaith dialogue sessions; Muslims and Hindu and Christian citizens of Pakistan.
Therefore, cultural relativism has the benefits of ensuring that the cultural differences are respected, protected and harmony is maintained in Pakistan.
