ABSTRACT This comprehensive collection of notes is accurately crafted to empower students to excel academically, ensuring they achieve a minimum of 80% marks in their examinations. The content is organized with clarity and precision, focusing on key concepts, critical analyses, and practical applications tailored to the syllabus. These notes serve as a reliable resource for both thorough preparation and last-minute revision. Designed to inspire confidence and mastery, this guide is an essential tool for students striving for academic excellence.
Maha Malik RESEARCH METHODS
Q. Why are basic research design issues important to consider before conducting the study and even during formulation of the research question?
Basic research design issues are crucial because they:
Help clarify the research purpose. Determine the kind of data to be collected. Identify appropriate data collection methods. Prevent potential validity and reliability issues. Ensure resource optimization (time, cost, personnel).
Design decisions at the formulation stage guide the entire research process, from hypothesis development to conclusion, making the study scientifically sound and ethically feasible.
Q. Explain the two forms of scientific method and how both are important.
The two forms are:
Inductive Reasoning: Moves from specific observations to general theories. For example, noticing repeated patterns and building a general conclusion. Deductive Reasoning: Moves from general theories to specific predictions. For example, testing a hypothesis derived from theory.
Both forms are interlinked in scientific research. Researchers often move back and forth between observation (induction) and theory (deduction) to refine and validate knowledge.
Q. Explain the ex post facto design.
In an ex post facto design, researchers study the effects of a variable after the fact—i.e., they do not manipulate variables but rather observe existing conditions or outcomes. It is used when manipulation is unethical or impossible. Researchers ensure objectivity by carefully selecting subjects to control extraneous factors.
Q. What do you understand by the term operationalization and how is it done?
Operationalization is the process of converting abstract concepts (e.g., morale, motivation) into measurable indicators. It involves:
Defining the concept theoretically. Identifying dimensions and elements. Creating measurable variables or questions (e.g., Likert scales).
This allows empirical testing and statistical analysis.
Q. Internal vs External Validity – Lab vs Field Experiment
Lab Experiment: High internal validity due to control over extraneous variables but low external validity because it's artificial. Field Experiment: High external validity (real-world setting), but lower internal validity due to lack of control.
Thus, a trade-off exists: to achieve high internal validity, researchers may sacrifice generalizability, and vice versa.
Setting Artificial/controlled Natural/real-life Control High Moderate to low Validity Focus Internal Validity External Validity
Example Testing memory in a quiet lab Studying work performance onsite
Q. Difference between High Internal Validity and Low External Validity
High Internal Validity: Ensures cause-effect inference (e.g., effect of X on Y). Focuses on accuracy within the study. Low External Validity: Limits generalizability beyond the study conditions.
Q. What is Personal Interviewing? How is it conducted and where?
Personal interviewing involves face-to-face communication where the interviewer asks questions and records responses. It is conducted:
At respondents' homes In offices On the street In shopping malls
It's useful for detailed responses but is costly and time-consuming.
