Where your fingers go
- 1 Sit up straight in front of the screen Keep your feet flat, the keyboard close and your wrists just above the desk.
- 2 Rest your fingers on the home row Left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;. The bumps on F and J let you find them without looking.
- 3 Use the right finger for each key Each colour on the keyboard above belongs to one finger. Press Space with either thumb.
- 4 Look at the screen, not your hands It feels slow at first. After a few days your fingers will find the keys on their own.
How much you type in a VU exam
You sit your midterm and final term on a computer at your exam centre. You choose MCQ answers with the mouse and type your answers to short and long questions.
- Courses with an MCQ-only paper, like CS101 and ENG101, have no typed answers. See the VU paper pattern
- Practice for 10 minutes a day. Do lessons 1 to 3 until you can type them without looking at the keys, then move on to the exam answer.
- Midterms start on 7 December 2026. Book your exam centre and slots
