What BT601 Assignment 1 asks

This assignment requires students to explore the structural characteristics of two different viruses using the VIPERdb database. Students must select two unique viruses, extract specific capsid and genomic data, and document their findings. The final output involves creating a comparative analysis table and presenting visual evidence of the capsid structures. Each student is required to choose a unique pair of viruses to ensure original work.

  1. Part A: Study Virus 1

Search for a virus on the VIPERdb website and access its information page. Record the virus name, PDB ID, and specific capsid details into the provided comparison table. Additionally, capture a screenshot of the virus's capsid structure.

  2. Part B: Study Virus 2

Select a second, different virus from the VIPERdb database. Follow the same procedure to record its information in the comparison table and capture a screenshot of its capsid structure.

  3. Virus Structure Comparison

    10 marks

Complete Table 1 by populating it with the collected data for both viruses, including resolution, family, genus, genome type, host, T number, subunit count, surface charge, radius, and diameter. Ensure the final document includes the comparison table and the two side-by-side screenshots with labels.

What to submit
One document containing the completed comparison table and two side-by-side screenshots of the virus capsids with their respective names and PDB IDs.
