What CS401P Assignment 1 asks
This assignment requires writing an assembly language program using NASM to manipulate a student's VUID. The student must process the ID string by splitting it into specific segments and then perform a mathematical calculation on the numeric portions. The final output involves demonstrating the program's execution and memory state using the AFD debugger.
-
1
Task 1. Splitting the Student ID
Save your VUID as a single string in memory and split it into three distinct parts: the two-letter prefix, the first four numeric digits, and the remaining five numeric digits. Store these parts separately in memory as prefix, LHS, and RHS. You are strictly prohibited from hard-coding these values.
-
2
Task 2. Division of Numeric Parts
Calculate the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the LHS and RHS values obtained in the previous task. Use a method of repeated division where the larger value is divided by the smaller until the remainder is zero, and store the result in the BX register. If either input value is zero, the BX register must be set to 0xFFFF.
- What to submit
- One MS-Word document containing the assembly language program and a screenshot of the AFD debugger showing memory contents and the BX register.
- Topics covered
- NASM assembly language String manipulation Memory addressing Greatest Common Divisor algorithm AFD debugger Register operations

Lesson covered
The questions in this assignment come from this lesson. Read it in the CS401P handout before you open the assignment file, then practise it with the MCQs and past papers.
Solution
No solution was added before this assignment closed. The assignment file stays here so you can revise lesson 3.
Before you submit on VULMS
- 1 This assignment closed without a solution. Use the assignment file to revise lesson 3 before your exams.
- 2 Write the final answer in your own words. VU checks assignments for copying, and copied work gets zero marks.
- 3 Save your answer in the file type the assignment file asks for, and name it with your student ID, for example BC260012345.
- 4 Open the file once more to check it is not empty or corrupted, then upload it on VULMS before 11:59 pm on Thu 5 Nov.
Questions about this assignment
When is CS401P Assignment 1 due?
It closed on Thursday 5 November 2026. VULMS no longer accepts files for it, but the assignment stays here for revision.
Will a solution be added?
No. Solutions are written only while an assignment is open on VULMS, and this one closed on Thursday 5 November 2026. The assignment file stays here for revision.
Can I submit the solution as it is?
No. VU checks assignments for copying, and copied work gets zero marks. Use the solution to check your method, then write your own answer.
What file do I submit?
The assignment file says which file type to upload and lists any extra instructions from your instructor. Name the file with your student ID before you upload it on VULMS.
